GC-MS Testing: Applications, Sample Requirements and Reports

What is GC-MS testing?

Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) combines separation of compounds with mass-based detection to support identification and measurement. Its suitability depends on the compounds, sample matrix and analytical method. Headspace sampling is a sample-introduction approach; it should not be treated as another name for all GC-MS testing.

When should a manufacturer consider GC-MS analysis?

GC-MS may be considered when a testing question involves suitable volatile or semi-volatile compounds, solvent-related impurities or identification of unknown components. The laboratory should first confirm whether the proposed method can answer the specific question. Identification and quantitative measurement require different supporting evidence.

What information should you provide before testing?

Share the sample type, target compounds or suspected contamination, expected concentration range, required reporting limits and intended use of the report. Include handling precautions and an applicable specification, where available.

Does every GC-MS test measure the same compounds?

No. The compounds covered and reporting limits depend on the method and sample. A broad screening result should not be described as proof that every possible contaminant is absent.
